Many new teachers have a hard time mastering classroom management and having their students behave in class. While resorting to discipline is always an option, sometimes the best way to promote student learning and good behavior is to create a strong sense of management in the classroom from day one. Here are some classroom management tips and techniques to help teachers create a safe, secure, and supportive environment for students. Student Procedures, Rules, and ExpectationsFrom the very first day of school, it is important for teachers to let students know what kind of behavior and conduct is expected from them. Work with the students to create a list of classroom rules and procedures. By letting the students have some independence and part in the rule making process, they will not only feel more connected to the classroom community, but more likely to follow the daily procedures expected of them. The best way to create a list of rules and classroom expectation procedures is by focusing on the concept of respect. When students learn to respect themselves and one another, they will come to have more self confidence, feel a closer bond with their teacher and fellow students, and succeed both in the classroom and outside the classroom. Each day, list a set of daily goals that help promote students to stay focused and keep improving their skills and behavior. According to EducationWorld.com, “setting these daily goals” will encourage students to establish a set routine and be more likely to follow directions and listen to the teacher. Teacher Teamwork and Student RelationshipsBeing a teacher is not just about coming to school, teaching students the content material, and going home. One of the best parts of being a teacher and creating good classroom management skills and techniques is to build close relationships with students. Teachers who come to learn about their students’ interests, likes, dislikes, and learning styles will help them come to know one another and respect each other. Behavior improves when students respect a teacher and come to not only tolerate the classroom community, but appreciate and look forward to it. Group work and collaborative community building activities among students are a great way of improving student learning and management. When students feel part of a team, their self confidence and self worth improves, as well as their communication and teamwork skills. Model, Reward, and Compliment Good BehaviorA good and efficient teacher is one who models the good behavior that they expect from students. By acting as a positive role model in making good choices, coming prepared to class, and being interested in the class material, that passion will help pass on to students. According to T heTeachersGuide.com, following these “having a good attitude… can really work to help improve classroom management.”
